As intelligent as computers may now be, it’s through utilising the differences between computers and humans that Vicap could create our unique Captcha test. Captcha stands for ‘Completely Automated Public Turing test for telling Humans and Computers Apart’ and was originally designed back in 1997 to determine whether a user is human or machine.
We all know that the artificial intelligence designed to solve Captcha’s has advanced hugely since then. However, the formats of the Captcha tests used to protect websites haven’t evolved sufficiently to outwit the methods being adopted by advanced computer programs. Using any of the current distorted image type of Captcha tests is posing an AI problem because machine learning rates are rapidly exceeding the speed at which the current Captcha images can be created.
With this in mind, VICAP wanted an entirely new approach. Computers and humans operate very differently, so we have embraced these differences to ensure the computer based attacks can’t pass the tests we produce.
Our eyes are highly sophisticated and we see the world around us in a drastically different way to computers. A computer can only process zeros and ones but the human visual system can examine and differentiate the quality and density of an object instantly. The idea behind VICAP was inspired by this process totally unique to humans and uses an advanced technology called “Trans-saccadic Integration Technique”.
By breaking down the human sight process, VICAP’s novel Captcha technology superimposes multiple frames (images) into a single object. Even if humans blink rapidly, or look away from a viewpoint, we see the world as one seamless image. This is why in less than a second, we can see the multiple frames in the VICAP Captcha as one. A computer does not have this ability so it’s an ideal test to tell computers apart rather than a standard Captcha with distorted images or distorted text.
Research has shown that none of the current computer recognition software or artificial intelligence techniques can decipher VICAP’s tests. They are unable to understand our revolutionary approach of using the sophistication of the human visual and sensory memory system. The advanced laboratory security test results confirm that VICAP is currently the most secure Captcha model on the market.
The diagram above shows how our innovative algorithm adopts a novel approach to create a single VICAP image. As the diagram shows, a final VICAP image is produced through a series of frames. Each frame only contains partial information about the final object with parts of it being hidden, and makes no sense to a computer in isolation. Therefore, in practice, it would not be possible for computer recognition programmes or any artificial intelligence techniques to retrieve and reconstruct the hidden object from the image by analysing the image.
With a VICAP Captcha our eyes are easily able to superimpose all of the images at a high refresh rate and the final object will appear in our brain. Using our sophisticated visual system we will have solved the problem in only 2-3 seconds. The nature of the current types of Captcha tests available has a serious disadvantage. By using image or text distortion as their main function, a common problem is that humans cannot decipher the images either.
It isn’t uncommon for users to need to refresh the Captcha tests multiple times in order to find one that is humanly legible. VICAP’s Captcha tests do no have these problems and when users see a VICAP Captcha they will know it’s a simple test rather than an unreliable one. This is good news to businesses who currently have their websites abandoned as soon as their users see the current types of Captcha which can be frustrating and time consuming to solve.
